Introducing the Sandbox Playbook – the rules that change the game

October 27th, 2011 by Antoine Verdon

After the great success of Transamerica, we can’t wait to see an even bigger crowd of Sandboxers join the Global Summit on January 20-22 in Lisbon! We always said that we want this event to have a lasting tangible outcome, something that not only the community can use, but that can also inspire others. Here’s our idea.

The Sandbox Playbook

Sandboxers may come from very different backgrounds and be engaged in different fields, they have one thing in common: they don’t play by the rules, but rather try to change them. Some of them have already done so, others have a vision on how to make it happen.

In Lisbon and on giant paper, we will capture the rules that Sandboxers live and act by, the rules that change the game. Our creation will be edited into a hardcopy that will live beyond the event, the Sandbox Playbook. The Playbook will show how Sandboxers are shaping tomorrow’s world, and empower people outside Sandbox to have a positive impact.

The Rules

Every session at the Summit – be it on personal productivity, origami or camel milk – will lead to one rule that will shape tomorrow’s world. Each rule will illustrate a way how Sandboxers drive change by finding new ways of working, developing themselves, and having an impact on the world. These three tracks (improving yourself, improving your projects and improving the world) will constitute the main frame of the Playbook.

We’ll let our participants write the pages of the book themselves on giant sheets of paper. After the session, the rule will be displayed in the Lobby, allowing everyone to contribute to it by sharing their personal stories, best practices and quotes. That way, the book emerges step by step during the 72 hours of the Summit.

The Summit

Over the last three years, we have tested different types of events and we are taking these learnings to build a program aimed at helping Sandboxers to bond and fast forward their projects.

The event is not about networking, it’s about forming real and meaningful relationships. We don’t want people to pitch and to tell each other how awesome they are; we want them to have real conversations, to collaborate, and to feel safe to show vulnerability. Participants will leave Lisbon with new, strong friendships, not with 100 business cards. The Global Summit is not about what you do in life, it’s about who you are, and what your goals, dreams and challenges are.

The Summit is designed as a 72 hours experience: there will be something going on at any point of the day, from the beginning to the end. It will be articulated around a central place, the Lobby, and a range of smaller sessions.

The Lobby
The Lobby is the heart of the Summit. A place where participants come to work, play, party, or simply relax. A corner with brainstorming material allows to fast prototype ideas. An open bar serves food and drinks all day long. The Lobby is the epicenter of all activities, a space constantly redesigned, adapting itself to each time of the day.

Sessions
Smaller groups to sessions allow Sandboxers to practice peer learning and problem solving. The sessions are articulated around 3 big tracks: improving yourself, improving your projects, improving the world. Each of the sessions results in one rule of the Playbook.
