A MISMATCH PROBLEM?
Organizing a conference might not be the core business of a magazine. But it seems to work very well for the New Yorker who recently organized its second annual conference. Now the videos are online, and the introduction by Malcolm Gladwell is definitively worth a look (The video is here, unfortunately, it can’t be embedded).
Malcolm talks about the challenge of hiring people in the modern world - and starts off by talking about sports. In professional sports, as well as in many other areas, there is what Malcolm calls the “mismatch problem”: The criteria used by companies to choose people are not matched to the skills they actually need in their work. If you want to know how someone performs at a job, statistics and standardized test won’t help you, says Malcolm. “The only thing you can do is wait until they’re actually doing the job.”

Most times one can’t hire perfect.
Perfect candidates are highly sought after and will be nabbed by the bigger players, they will be stolen from you if the need be.
One hires potential.
