How Sandbox works, part 1

Very early in the life of Sandbox, we were confronted with a problem that lots of start-ups and projects are facing: The people working for us were located on different continents, and in addition working part-time and traveling around a lot. So we started using a set of online tools to coordinate and collaborate - so many, in fact, that some of our interns were a bit overwhelmed at the beginning ;-) We decided to share our experiences with these tools in a series of blog posts - this is part one:

Yammer has become the heartbeat of Sandbox. This simple, Twitter-like tool allows everyone in our company to post short updates about what you’re working on. We use it frequently and for almost everything - be it to take quick decisions within the team or to share interesting links.

Even though a lot of the communication within our team takes place on Yammer, we communicate to third parties mostly through e-mails. And it often happens that several people from the team are e-mailing with the same person. This is why we use Highrise, which allows us to keep track of all our outside communication. The RSS feed Highrise offers makes it especially easy to follow what’s going on.

We’re using two different tools to share and store information: For most internal information and documents (such as meeting notes), we use Google Sites, a Wiki-like services. Other documents like Excel or Word files are shared with the team through a Dropbox account.

We’re curious: What tools have you been using to communicate and collaborate with your team? What are your experiences and recommendations? Let us know in the comments!

Nico has co-founded Sandbox. In addition to all the tools mentioned above, he highly recommends the task management system Remember The Milk.
