WHY WE’RE CALLED SANDBOX (AND WHAT OTHER NAMES WE HAD IN MIND)

I’ve been asked by several people why we have chosen the name Sandbox (and why our logo doesn’t look like a Sandbox at all). I let our designers explain about the logo some time back here; now it’s time to tell you the story behind the name Sandbox.

It wasn’t clear from the beginning that our project would be called Sandbox – actually, we spent quite some time brainstorming possible names. In the end, we stuck with Sandbox, because, as we explain on our ‘About us’ page, that’s exactly what the Sandbox conference should be: A place where you can make new friends, show off your toys and build new things from scratch. Sandbox will be a playground (yes, we considered that as a name as well) for new ideas, a place where you interact with other bright people to exchange and innovate. And, as in a real Sandbox, the people you’re meeting there might stay friends for the rest of your life.

The brainstorming process was great fun, by the way. Once, we were throwing around ideas in French, English and German in a restaurant in Fribourg – the people around us clearly thought we were crazy. We came up with some other cool names (and a lot of not-so-cool and really strange ones). Here are some of our favorite suggestions that nearly made it:

Red Pill, Mojo, Brain Hive, ID Camp, Shortcut, Beyond, Talent Circus, Brain Bazaar, Brainvenue, Spice Bazaar, Wonderlamp Bazaar, Carousel, Seeds, Nexus, Wings and Oasis.

If you want to pick a name from that list for your project, go ahead – just tell us about it so we know that our ideas haven’t been completely wasted.
