For me choosing between to make a career as an employee or to be an entrepreneur, is as choosing between a highly trafficked highway and a smaller country road to go from A to B. When you first look at it the highway seems like the obvious choice, it has a higher speed limit, it is going much straighter from A to B, and it has at least two lanes. However, the highway is more trafficked, since it is the choice of 99% of the car drivers, you have to make a lot of overtakes to go from A to B faster than all other car drivers, and it is much higher risk to get caught by the police for speeding or to end up in a traffic jam. When choosing the smaller country road, first, the road might be a little bit more bumpy and more curved, but the driving experience is often much more fun, you can practically drive with unlimited speed, given there is no traffic, the road view is often much more beautiful, and you could end up places you didn’t even know existed. In addition, if you get tired of driving (on the smaller country road) you can pull over and pick up a hitchhiker. Your car is still moving from A to B but you can spend time watching a movie or focus on finding beautiful stops on the way. Be careful though, there are hijackers out there.

At times I meet people who claim that they love being challenged and having to alter their beliefs. When I hear that statement I usually hold my enthusiasm.

You see there is one level of change that you can acquire by reading books and listening to people’s advice, but there is a more substantial level of change that you need to work with if you really want to revise who you are. That level requires a large amount of discipline and practice and involves the never-ending struggle with you, yourself and your stubbornness. And it’s painful.

There is a common test to exemplify this where one is asked to close both hands together as if to do a prayer. In this particular movement one of two thumbs is put on top of the other. This is a trained behaviour of the brain, and doing it differently usually feels odd. Studies show you would have to repeat putting the wrong thumb on top 200-300 times before it feels natural.

For me, challenging myself involves limiting focus to a few concrete points. These 1,2,3 characteristics of myself that I want to do something about I need to be able to work on every day. Every day involves dissolving the resistance barrier and introducing the revised behaviour by force. If this is not painful to you, perhaps you are not challenging yourself yet.

It was a gorgeous spring morning in New York, and the Bacchanal festival at Columbia University was in full swing when Gustav Borgefalk and I met for coffee. Gustav is currently a student at the Stockholm School of Economics. Mild mannered, friendly and easygoing, he told me all about his passion for essay writing and case studies, and how this has provided inspiration for his newest venture, Student Competitions. Gustav on Facebook and Twitter.

Tell us about the story of your latest project/occupation

My current focus is on Student Competitions (SC), a website that I started with friends in Sweden. We pitched the idea for this company on the Swedish version of the television show, Dragon’s Den, and are now up and running at full speed. We bridge the information gap between students and organizations that hold student competitions, by guiding students to both local and global events. Hence, we provide them a larger sphere in which to participate and showcase their skills. Competition is intrinsic to life, and I believe that it can lead to positive growth. It gives anyone the opportunity to become an academic superstar, and win opportunities and recognition regardless of their background. Currently, we have offices in Sweden, the UK and India, and are in the process of expanding to China and the US. SC was recently one named of the world’s 100 Most Innovative Student Ventures by the Kairos Society and exhibited at a fair at the New York Stock Exchange!

What are you doing and how did you get there?

My desire to found Student Competitions originated from my own passion for competition. Last year I submitted a case study for a microfinance organization in India called Hand in Hand and won the opportunity to do an internship in Tamil Nadu. We worked on bridging the ‘digital divide’ that has arisen in urban and rural India, by providing self-sustaining Internet access in rural India. I consider myself an opportunist, and do not turn opportunities down. I just say yes and make the most of it! By helping other people, you will always be presented with new opportunities. The good you do will come back to you, because individuals want to help one another succeed if you are helpful to them.

Tell us about the biggest successes and failures in your life. What worked, what didn’t and what did you learn?

For me, the biggest success in life is really tied into being a happy person. Feeling good about myself, and what I do, is the most important thing. Being able to pursue, and stay committed to, an entrepreneurial path in life has been one of my successes. Winning one of the world’s largest student essay competitions in 2007 helped me realize that I was a strong competitor and has paved the way for the rest of my opportunities. However, I have had my fair share of failures too. Often, I have not been able to live up to people’s expectations because I’m constantly trying to live up to my own. Two years ago I entered a business venture with seven other friends, but found that I had stepped into a role that I wasn’t really ready for and consequently was not able to deliver results. It taught me how important it is to be comfortable with my settings; one that includes the right people, in an environment that I’m in control of, at an appropriate stage in my life. On the occasion that I won the St. Gallen Wings of Excellence Award, I had travelled to Switzerland to present my paper. I climbed onto the stage, in front of 600 of the world’s most influential leaders…and promptly fainted in under a minute! In hindsight, it was the best PR stunt I could ever have pulled. It meant that they actually had to read my paper for themselves to find out what I was going to say.

What do you want to achieve in a) the next week, b) the next year, and c) the next 10 years?

a) Firstly, I have to make it back to Europe this week, once air traffic is back to normal. I am throwing a launch party for Student Competitions back in Sweden, in connection with Dragon’s Den. I am also going to reconnect with old friends, as well as apply for one or two new competitions. I try to participate in one every week!

b) Next year, I want Student Competitions to be the worlds best website for information on student competitions. I want to do new things, continue exploring the world, and meet great new people. I’m also going to graduate! Just a few more exams to take care of.

c) In the next 10 years, I want to work with the worlds greatest entrepreneurs, make the world a better place, and have a lot of fun while doing it =D

What was your most inspiring moment during the last two weeks?

Since it is my first time to the US, experiencing springtime in New York has been just smashing! My first meeting with Sandboxers in NY was also truly inspirational.

How could other Sandboxers and the outside world support you and why would that be exciting for them?

Sandboxers can help me spread the world about Student Competitions by talking and blogging about it. I know that Sandboxers love global opportunities, and by helping me with this venture, perhaps I too can guide them towards competitions that are of interest, or assist them with new undertakings. I’m very grateful to Fabian for providing me with invaluable support here in NY.

Malin Berdette, 28, describes herself as a “global dreamer, traveling the world turning my visions into reality”. She is originally from Sweden but currently traveling the world for 610 days for her project “Win Win World Tour“. Her goal is to raise enough money to spend $100 000 per month to projects empowering millions of people worldwide starting from Dec. 31st 2010. Malin on facebook and twitter.

Tell us the story of your latest project / occupation.

I felt a strong desire to make a difference so I packed a suitcase, gave away all of my belongings and the 1st of May 2009 I got going. Now I’m on a 610 day journey called the Win Win World Tour, with the following goal: “From Dec 31st 2010 I’m giving $100 000 per month to projects empowering millions of people worldwide.” Up until now, Day 290, I’ve visited Sweden, USA, Mexico, Canada, Ireland and Australia. I’ve met hundreds and hundreds of people, been in conversations about change and empowerment, connected people & projects worldwide; I have laughed, cried, succeeded, given up and gotten back on track again.

What are you doing and how did you get there?

I’m starting a foundation called The Conscious Capitalist™ uniting people worldwide with a mission to create financial freedom for empowering projects. The aim of the foundation The Conscious Capitalist™ is to fund, build and educate other self-generating projects and foundations, combining the most efficient and sustainable processes from non-profits and corporations. Basically it comes down to releasing unnecessary friction, by training visionary and brilliant minds around the world into highly efficient change makers, and providing a financial platform allowing them to immediately create the changes that benefit us all. How I got to where I am is well summed up in a quote that I once got from a precious persons mom: “If you wish to know where you’re going, ask the ones you meet”. I engage in dialogues with the people I bump into, no matter if it’s the newly released ex-prisoner, or if it’s the business man who’ve made and lost $55 million over the last years. It’s during those conversations that my vision becomes clearer and I find my next step. I’m also fully following my hunches and inspirations.

Tell us about the biggest successes and failures in your life. What worked, what didn’t, and what did you learn?

My biggest successes are two major team efforts. First I was part of a team of 150 leaders who created more than $80k in cash and $20k in building material and other supplies during 5 hours in San Diego, followed by building 5 houses, 8 latrines, and 14 concrete slabs during another 5 hours in Mexico. Handing over the keys to the new house owners, who used to live in shacks, was truly heartwarming.
Next I was awarded one of the most influential team members and informal leaders when we as a team of 70 leaders set new records by completing 138 of 140 goals in 10 weeks, creating a monetary value of over $4 million, and creating numerous other results. That’s when I truly realized my ability to create energy and build momentum towards a united vision on an international level.
My biggest failures are the situations where I’ve pushed myself too hard on my own. For example I combined studying, working, being active in politics and all with a trying-hard-on-my-own mentality. My body ended up screaming NO, which lead to a year of recovery (that led me to the gift of self-discovery, reflection, insights and a valuable lesson). The key failure here was my trying-hard-on-my-own mentality. I’m achieving much more now, and yet I’m having way more fun.

What didn’t work: trying to achieve better results by working harder, especially hiding away on my own, in combination with trying to live up to my own assumptions regarding others’ unspoken expectations.

What did work: setting a clear intention for myself, sharing mutual expectations with the ones I’m interacting with, following my inner guidance, being in motion, sharing my dreams and visions with those around me, taking one step after the other, asking for feedback, being fluent and open to the present moment.

What I’ve learned: I’ve noticed that everything is as easy as I allow it to be. There’s always a smooth solution. Mostly it’s just a matter of changing perspectives.

Also: Unspoken expectations can only be met by change. Shared expectations are met by choice.

What do you want to achieve in the next week, the next year, the next 10 years?

Within the next week: I’ve chosen the selected few to whom I’ll give unique access to my diaries and notes. Together we’ll go through the raw material, finding the good stuff for a book about what’s going on in the mind of a global dreamer, intending to change the world.

Within the next year: The foundation The Conscious Capitalist™ is alive and kicking, with a base of $10 million, giving $100k per month to projects empowering millions of people worldwide.

Within the next 10 years: I am grateful to be part of the Young Global Leaders Community, selected by World Economic Forum and their Selection Committee. Our powerful team is collectively shaping the future, by taking committed action on multiple levels towards a sustainable world.

What was your most inspiring moment during the last two weeks?

I’ve welcomed onboard John Laine, who mentors me through strategies, organization, business plan etc. I’ve also invited and welcomed Aron Solomon, Think Global School, to my board of directors. Above that I’m happy to be part of the new Higher Life coaching team.

How could other Sandboxers and the outside world support you and why would that be exciting for them?

My goal is to raise $10 million on or before the 31st of October 2010. According to my financial planning a base like that generates $100k per month, during the upcoming 30 years, directly towards the mission: financial freedom for empowering projects. In our world we do have the time, money, energy, knowledge, wisdom and all other resources required to make any changes we wish to do, right here and right now. It’s just a matter of connecting the right people with the right resources, together with implementing and allowing efficient processes, turning visions into reality. That’s where The Conscious Capitalist™ comes into the picture.

Appreciated support
1. connect me with potential members for my board of directors.
2. share your ideas and suggestions regarding setting up a truly sustainable self generating financial model for the foundation.
3. brainstorm possibilities about how to reach the goal.

The exciting part is that the faster this baby gets off the ground, the faster we’ll start setting empowering projects financially free. Maybe your project could benefit from that?

Patrick Boström is 24 years old and was born and raised in Sweden. He is currently studying in Hong Kong. Besides beeing responsible for coordinating a volunteer project with Light for Children he and his team just won the Hong Kong Social Entrepreneurship Challenge competition.
Patrick on facebook and twitter.

Tell us the story of your latest project / occupation.

The latest project I was working on was a volunteer project with Light for Children, being personally responsible for the coordination and execution of the project. The project was an educational initiative with the objectives to create awareness, reduce stigma, enable a dialogue and help children in the ages 10-19 to protect themselves against and prevent Sexual Assault. Throughout a 10 day travel in Accra and Kumasi in Ghana our group was able to teach at 7 different schools and reach out to around 1300 students.

What are you doing and how did you get there?

Currently I am involved in many projects related to Social Business in Hong Kong. Studying in Hong Kong as an International student and demonstrating my passion towards developing others and doing good in society has led me to the path I am currently on. Sharing your passion with others and taking action on ideas will get you a long way!

Tell us about the biggest successes and failures in your life. What worked, what didn’t, and what did you learn?

The biggest success in my life so far is going abroad to study full-time. The experiences and personal growth gained from it, far exceeds what I anticipated before going to Hong Kong. Living on your own having to take care of yourself, while adapting to a new environment and managing school work is very different from living back home. What I have learned is that we have to take responsibility for our feelings, actions and every result we get. I´m sure that once I finish undergraduate studies and can focus all my efforts towards Social Business I will experience more successes. I have not experienced any major failures, however there are always room for improvement when it comes to effectiveness and healthy living habits. We can all improve in many ways, we just have to put some effort into changing our bad, old habits.

What do you want to achieve in the next week, the next year, the next 10 years?

Next week: Win a Social Entrepreneur Competition in Hong Kong with ICE (Intercultural Education Centre), an initiative started by myself and Freddy Law Wai Hung.
Next month: Establish Young Drucker Undergraduate (A Social Entrepreneur Development Program) in Hong Kong, that continuously educates and develops students into future Social Entrepreneurs.
Next 10 years: Be the leader of the Social Business movement in Asia.

What was your most inspiring moment during the last two weeks?

The most inspiring moment during the last two weeks was going around to schools in Kumasi, Ghana, talking to principals and teachers about the Child Sexual Abuse Prevention Program. They were so supportive and grateful for our work, it touched me how valuable they thought our efforts were. We got asked to come back to help training teachers to be able to teach about this topic in school. After the first two days of teaching at schools, the Light for Children helpline received 5 calls from children asking to meet with staff to help them deal with assaults they have experienced. That is a good indicator of the impact that the Light for Children volunteers made.

How could other Sandboxers and the outside world support you and why would that be exciting for them.

Light for Children are always looking for passionate volunteers that can give a helping hand at orphanages for HIV/AIDS affected children, teach about Sexual Assault Prevention in schools and to help out at hospitals in Kumasi. We accept volunteers from all over the world, throughout the year, as long as you are passionate and want to make an impact! People in Ghana are very friendly and you will have a great time living there with a host family, learning the local language Twi and eating the local cuisine. Ghana is a peaceful and beautiful country. The experience of giving as a volunteer is something that I recommend whole heartedly. Let´s get going!

Patrick’s favourites:

Book- The lost symbol
Food- anything spicy
Drink- fresh milk
Quote- “To predict the future you have to create it” – Peter Drucker

While building up Sandbox, we have the luck to meet people who are driven by the same spirit and do similar things like us all over the world, but often with a slightly different focus. We have been amazed by the Young Entrepreneurs of Sweden (YEOS) and look very much forward to working more closely together with them as partners in the future. A while back I met with Fredrik Hagenius (one of the founders) and Alan Haghighi (the event manager) from YEOS and I posted a short video. Have a look!

More about the Young Entrepreneurs of Sweden; YEOS is a nationwide network established to connect, educate and inspire young entrepreneurs in the age from 18 to 30. YEOS was founded to be an accelerator helping young achievers learn and grow with the help of each other, which shall lead to more successful businesses and an enriched private life. The network relies on is members for the development, having a cooperative legal setup where each member is a part owner. Each year, YEOS arrange two national events and several regional meetings gathering the foremost young entrepreneurs in Sweden to exchange ideas, network and be inspired. Activities of the network are mainly financed by partners and project assignments.

At Sandbox, we see every day that our generation (Gen Y) is truly different from former generations and one thing that strucks us again and again is to see the diversity of amazing things that young people can achieve already in their twenties. Why do one thing if you can do 10 different things at the same time? At the Entreprenörsdagen Event in Sweden two weeks ago, I met Therese Albrechtson who perfectly fits this category. She’s 23 years old and already running 3 companies under the umbrella of one holding company.

Just after graduation from high school, Therese founded her first company, Bodyguard Säkerhetsprodukter, developing and selling personal security products. Just 6 months afterwards, the company broke even, and now those products are available in stores in different European countries. Two years later, she decided to found a fashion company, focussed on black&white cloth, followed by a new company with the aim to market interactive whiteboards. From security products to black&white fashion and interactive technology, what a spread! I believe this diversity is amazing and a strong sign that someone is really driven by passion for ideas (rather than just making money). It proves the point, that you really dont need to be an industry expert to make things happen nowadays but you rather should just try. I think Therese is the new form of Gen Y serial entrepreneurs: passionate idea lovers who want to try it all! Would you agree?

Have a look at the short video interview and learn more about Therese on her website.

I had the great pleasure to speak at the Entreprenörsdagen last Monday in Göteborg, Sweden, about Generation Y Entrepreneurs and their ways of doing business. I met so many exciting people in Sweden and will publish some of the video interviews I made in the next couple of days and weeks on this blog.

I wanted to share my presentation with everyone (find it here) (made with the great technology of Zuiprezi, Budapest, Hungary, many thanks for your support!) and also include selected background links which have inspired me. I’m very curious to hear what people think and would love to get feedback and suggestions for improvements for the next time.

Many thanks and congratulations to the organizers for their great work!
